Magazine / Periodical First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Two highly collectible issues of Magill magazine for the combined price listed. Although Pope John Paul II is the feature article in both, all of the usual features and journalists are still included in these issues such as Bruce Arnold, Gene Kerrigan, Sam Smyth and of course Vincent Browne himself. Some of the other articles feature Loudon Wainwright, the All Ireland Football Final, the National Gallery, Lord Killanin and much more. The pages of both issues have tanned. The condition of the September issue is very good. It has a pen mark on the cover but otherwise a clean copy with no tear and very little creasing. The October 1979 issue covering the visit has been repeatedly read and the back cover is quite creased. The binding is sound on both. Please examine photographs and feel free to ask any questions and for more photos.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Issued to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Arms Trial in Dublin. 5 issues in all. They contain the diaries of Peter Berry (1909 - 1978), the long-serving Secretary of the Department of Justice, 1961 - 1971 - Browne describes them as "the top secret memoirs of Ireland's most powerful civil servant". Browne's account is in the May- July issues. Included is a new cutting from the Irish Times containing Des O'Malley's statement on the series in Magill and the Editor's reply. In November Browne returned to the story and skilfully set out the key questions for the forthcoming debate in Dail Eireann. In the December issue he presents the final material from the Berry papers. A unique insight into a key event in modern Irish political history. In the words of Patrick Maume in The Dictionary of Irish Biography, "These created a political sensation and remain an indispensable historical source". For the Dail Debate in November 1980, see item 2568 in my stock.

This book offers an insightful look into the early history of the United States Customs Service from 1851-1852, centered around a dispute between the Collector and Appraiser of San Francisco. The Collector claimed the Appraiser should be responsible for the addition of certain charges to the appraised value of imported merchandise while the Appraiser maintained that the Collector was responsible. The book presents the correspondence between the two officials, including their arguments and interpretations of the relevant laws and regulations. It delves into the broader context of the establishment and evolution of the Customs Service, highlighting the complexities and challenges faced by customs officials during this period of rapid economic growth and immigration. The book provides valuable insights into the legal, administrative, and practical aspects of customs administration, offering a unique perspective on the history of international trade and the development of the United States economy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
