In later life he began to record the gold fields' histories, creating a first-hand record of this important golden era for Otago, and NZ generally. This book was first published in 1887 with this first reprint (by the original publisher) in 1962. when the centennials of the gold strikes were being recalled. Illustrations are confined to portraiits of notable contempory personalities. wth the front end-papers depicting an artist's impression of Gabriels' Gully' in 1862, former owner small ink name/date extreme top edge of the front illustration -- the sole impediment to this copy.
