Born in New Haven, Vermont January 23, 1853, Abernethy graduated from Middlebury in 1876 and went on to earn a PhD in Anglo-Saxon and English Literature at Yale University. His passion for literature and education guided his commitment to teaching and contributing to the study of literature, earning him a Doctor of Letters. A champion of coeducation, he served as principal of the Berkeley Institute in Brooklyn, New York, a school for the education of young ladies and published extensively on the importance of education for both sexes."
