Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. London: Sidgwick & Jackson, 1922. First edition, first printing. This is a very good copy. In the original navy blue cloth, with gilt titling to the front panel and spine. Some abrasion to the spine. The text blocks have a few spots of foxing. Internally, the book is mostly clean, with a few sparse spots. The frontispiece, a photograph of Violet Spender by Emery Walker, is crisp with the original tissue guard. This copy is free from inscriptions and is, overall, in very good condition. This volume is compiled by the poet's husband Harold. It was published in the year following her death, after complications during an operation. In the foreword, Harold writes: 'The writer of these verses was snatched from us just as she seemed on the threshold of a fuller, happier life: and we are still sitting in the shadow of that eclipse. [] We preserved her poems because we thought them worthy of being preserved; and now, after careful winnowings, we published a few that seem to deserve a larger life.' In this volume, Violet's poems reflect the horror of war, after her brother Alfred, who was a Lieutenant in the 4th (Queen's Own) Hussars was killed in action. Scarce.
