Brown leather exterior with gilt to front and spine. Exterior shows edge and corner chips/wear and chipping is also present at top and bottom of spine. Interior binding is good, no hinge issues, nothing torn or loose. Previous owners name is written on front pastedown and it was also found two more times on interior pages, where it was written along the top edge. The blank pages in the back along with the graph paper pages are all handwriting free. Only handwriting found in book were the three signatures in the number 238 written along the page edge of the copyright page. This is the first edition, which shows no copyright or print date other than the serial designation of 9-16 (September, 1916). This is an extremely rare publication with only a few third editions surviving, this one being the first.…

(ca 1916); 3 3/4 x 6 1/2; captioned, monochrome illustrations from photographs to recto; one with a small cut to bottom edge, else overall very minor wear; in very good to near fine condition.Founded in Roanoke in 1888 as the American Bridge Works (its name would be changed to the Virginia Bridge and Iron Company in 1893), it would grow into a major structural steel and bridge builder, eventually opening branch plants in Memphis and Birmingham and manufacturing hundreds of highway metal truss bridges, railroad bridges, and commercial building frames across the American South and Mid-Atlantic. A large number of their surviving structures are currently listed on the US National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), such as High Bridge in Farmville, VA, larkton Bridge in Nathalie, VA, the State Highway 23 Bridge at the Clear Fork of the Brazos River in Texas, and so on.The current advertising covers featured various projects of the company, including the Ocean Steamship Company's terminals in Savannah, GA, Norfolk and Western Railway Company Coal Pier in Norfolk, VA (which would evolve into the largest and fastest coal-loading complex in the Northern Hemisphere), Mississippi River's Harahan Bridge in Memphis, TN, etc.…

Vintage albumen print, 19.2x11.8 cm (approximately 7 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches), on a gray card mount with tan decorative border around the print. Handwritten caption on verso: "Natural Bridge of Virginia / Height 215 / Width 900 / Natural Bridge May 24, 1904 / H. G. Bennett." Once known as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the Modern World, Natural Bridge, a limestone gorge carved out by Cedar Creek, was a major North American tourist attraction during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. According to American poet William Cullen Bryant, Natural Bridge and Niagara Falls were the two most remarkable features of North America. The property is now a state park managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Natural Bridge State Park officially opened on September 24, 2016.
