Minor cracking and wear to front hinge. Text block remains bound well with minor instances of wear throughout. Inscriptions to front end pages. Assorted small color illustrations throughout. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce and nicely decorated piece, with the publisher's name being listed as Bobbs-Merrill on the title page and Bowen-Merrill on the subsequent page, due to the company's name changing by 1903 to honor the longtime director, William Conrad Bobbs. Green cloth over boards with illustrated pastedown on front cover; white stamping on spine, gilt stamping on front cover. Foxing to pastedown, but it still looks quite lovely. No date on title page. First copyright to James Whitcomb Riley -- 1888, 1899, 1902; Copyright 1902 to the Bowen-Merrill Company, just a year before it was to become the Bobbs-Merrill Company. Pages not numbered. Previous owner's inscription on front free endpaper. Interior otherwise clean and unmarked, with bright, clean pages. Box is covered in gray paper, with red lettering and illustration on front. Corners of the box's top are split in poor condition, but is present and still houses book. A nice, illustrated copy of one of the Hoosier Poet's best-known poems.
