Paperback. Condition: Very Good. From the drop of an apple to the stately dance of the galaxies, gravity is omnipresent in the Cosmos. Even with its high profile, gravity is the most enigmatic of all the known basic forces in nature. The Lighter Side of Gravity presents a beautifully clear and completely nontechnical introduction to the phenomenon of this force in all its manifestations. Astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar begins with an historical background to the discovery of the law of gravitation by Isaac Newton in the seventeenth century. Using familiar analogies, interesting anecdotes, and numerous illustrations to get across subtle effects and difficult points to readers, he goes on to describe the general theory of relativity and some of its strange and unfamiliar ideas such as curved spacetime, the bending of light, and black holes. Since first publication in 1982 (W.H. Freeman), Dr. Narlikar has brought his book completely up to date and expanded it to include the discovery of gigantic gravitational lenses in space, the findings of the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite, the detection of dark matter in galaxies, the investigation of the very early Universe, and other new ideas in cosmology. This lucid and stimulating book presents a clear approach to the intriguing phenomenon of gravity for everyone who has ever felt caught in its grip. Jayant Narlikar is the winner of many astronomical prizes and the author of Introduction to Cosmology (Cambridge University Press, 1993).…

Paperback. Condition: Good. The Panchatantra is a collection of folktales and fables that were believed to have been originally written in Sanskrit by Vishnu Sharma more than 2500 years ago. This collection of stories features animal characters which are stereotyped to associate certain qualities with them. The origins of the Panchatantra lie in a tale of its own when a King approached a learned pandit to ask him to teach the important lessons of life to his ignorant and unwise sons. This learned scholar knew that the royal princes could not understand complex principles in an ordinary way. So he devised a method wherein he would impart important knowledge in the form of simple and easy-to-understand folktales. Thus the Panchatantra came into origin. It is one of the most popular collection of Indian tales and has influenced literature all over the world since the time of its conception. This particular version of the Panchatantra was translated by G L Chandiramani who has also translated the Hitopadesha. Panchatantra comes from the individual words ' pancha' and ' tantra' . While pancha refers to the number five tantra refers to ways/strategies related to inner fulfilment. The stories in this book aim to impart the deeper wisdom of life through the simple portrayal of animal characters. The story of two geese and an tortoise is dedicated to the moral of heeding a trusted friend' s advice. Another story deals with a wise old rabbit and an angry lion who can' t control his impatience. This paperback version of the Panchatantra was published in 1991 by Rupa &amp Co.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Gravity is the most enigmatic of all known basic forces in nature. Yet it controls everything from the motion of ocean tides to the expansion of the entire Universe. Many books use technical jargon and high-powered maths to explain what gravity is all about. In The Lighter Side of Gravity, the presentation is beautifully clear and completely non-technical. Familiar analogies, interesting anecdotes and numerous illustrations are used throughout to get across subtle effects and difficult points. The coverage is, however, comprehensive and makes no compromise with accuracy. This second edition has been brought completely up to date and expanded to include the discovery of gigantic gravitational lenses in space, the findings of the COBE satellite, the detection of MACHOS, the investigations of the very early Universe and other new ideas in cosmology. In short, this lucid and stimulating book presents 'the lighter side' of the intriguing phenomena of 'gravity' to the student and general reader.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The serenity of a clear night sky belies the evidence--gathered by balloons, rockets, satellites, and telescopes--that the universe contains centers of furious activity that pour out vast amounts of energy, some in regular cycles and some in gigantic bursts. This reader-friendly book, acclaimed by Nature as excellent and uncompromising, traces the development of modern astrophysics and its explanations of these startling celestial fireworks. This lively narrative ranges from the gravitational theories of Newton and Einstein to recent exciting discoveries of such violent phenomena as supernovae, pulsars, X-ray sources, active galaxies, radio sources, and quasars. An in-depth exploration of the Big Bang covers both conventional theory and subsequent issues that cast doubt upon its explanation of the birth of the universe. Several appendixes offer supplements to the text's main topics, and a helpful glossary and tables of references appear at the end.…
