A collection of 81 photographic plates, each being a reproduction of an illustration from Visino's journals, written between 1853-1854 during his travels in Mexico, though many of the sketches were apparently drawn during the author's travels in the Andes and Central America from 1836 through the 1850s. Each plate is accompanied by an explanation; deities and motifs from five plates feature comparative notes with Assyrian and Egyptian cultures. Many of Visino's sketches were taken from locales in Oaxaca, the Yucatan peninsula, and Central America, including Mictlan, Liobaa, Palenque, Cuilapan, Itztli, Zachila and other sites. First plate heavily foxed; remaining mounting plates and photographs are lightly to moderately foxed, but the images themselves remain clear overall. Mounting plates are buckled, with rear hinge yawning as a result, but a sound copy of a rare work: OCLC locates no copies. Toovey's Dec 13, 2022 auction, Lot 3542 for the original German manuscript only, lacking the drawings.
