Unbound. Condition: Very Good. Original artwork, oil on canvas housed in a black wooden frame. Measuring approximately 10" x 15". A small pinhole in the center of the painting (on the boy's right shoulder), else appears very good though unexamined out of frame. Signed by the artist. Part of a series of paintings, by the architect Ferruccio Vitale who appears to have produced many painting in his spare time, though no online write-up of him mentions this pastime. We know it's part of a series because two were placed at auction in 2015, sold as a pair, one showing a very similar scene as this painting, the other showing an "after" scene in which the middle stump has been knocked down and the boy dons a face of disappointment. Though the one painting appears to be the same as this one at first glance, a closer look reveals that the number and orientation of the rocks differs and the boy's expression appears more strained, if not fearful, as if in tense anticipation of the bowler's throw; whereas here, he looks more happy and relaxed. Vitale is best remembered as a landscape architect, a field in which he was highly influential, helping to bring it to the American Academy in Rome in 1915. Born and raised in Italy, much of Vitale's professional life was lived in the United States where he served as president of the New York chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and was awarded the 1920 Gold Medal of the Architectural League of New York. Though not remembered for his paintings, they possess a certain old world charm and sentimentality that makes them quite captivating; this one in particular beams with nostalgia.…
