La vicenda poetica di Betteloni rappresenta un caso paradossalmente esemplare delle dinamiche di modernizzazione che investirono il sistema letterario italiano. Fautore di un deciso superamento de…i moduli espressivi del tardo romanticismo pratiano-aleardiano, ma estraneo allo sperimentalismo della pur vivace avanguardia scapigliata, Betteloni individua il presupposto ineludibile per un rinnovamento della poesia italiana nel dialogo con un nuovo pubblico di lettori: alla media e piccola borghesia urbana è elettivamente rivolto il suo libro d'esordio, «In primavera» (1869). Lo spazio inedito accordato ai procedimenti dell'ironia, la stratificazione a più livelli della voce, la sistematica diffrazione del punto di vista rappresentativo corrodono dall'interno la rigida struttura del monologismo lirico tradizionale, e mirano a raggiungere una sintesi contrappuntistica tra i ritmi della 'prosa' e della 'poesia', del canto spiegato e della discorsività narrativa. Il clamoroso insuccesso del libro rivelò la carica anacronistica del progetto. Eppure, proprio nel suo esito fallimentare, l'ambiziosa proposta betteloniana conserva ancor oggi una prorompente carica suggestiva. Qualche leggero segno del tempo alla coperta, ai tagli e alle pagine interne (ingiallimento della carta), per il resto esemplare integro.
