Geboren in Bern, studierte Volkmar Andreae am Kölner Konservatorium und wurde dann Solorepetitor an der Münchner Hofoper; von 1902 bis 1904 dirigierte er den Stadtsängerverein in Winterthur, daneben seit 1902 den Gemischten Chor in Zürich. Dort leitete er auch den Männerchor, übernahm 1906 das Orchester der Tonhallegesellschaft und dirigierte 191416 den Studentenchor Zürich. Später wurde Andreae zum Musikdirektor, zum Privatdozenten an der Universität Zürich und zum Direktor des Konservatoriums ernannt. 192025 stand er dem Schweizerischen Tonkünstlerverein vor und war danach dessen Ehrenpräsident. In Mailand dirigierte er 1912 bzw. 1917 die ersten Aufführungen der Matthäuspassion' von Johann Sebastian Bach und der Missa solemnis' von Ludwig van Beethoven auf italienischem Boden. Neben zahlreichen Symphonien, Klavierstücken und Chorwerken komponierte Andreae die 1914 uraufgeführte Oper Ratcliff'" (DBE).
