Condition: Good. First Edition.

Over millions of years of isolation, exceptional and sometimes bizarre mammals evolved on islands, such as pig-sized elephants and hippos, giant rats and gorilla-sized lemurs that would have been formidable to their mainland ancestors.Evolution of Island Mammals, Second Edition, provides an updated and expanded overview of the current knowledge on fossil island mammals worldwide, ranging from the Oligocene to the onset of the Holocene. The book addresses evolutionary processes and key aspects of insular mammal biology, exemplified by a variety of fossil species.Readers familiar with the first edition will find here a host of updated and enhanced material, including:An entirely new chapter on the island ruleUpdated and expanded theoretical chaptersUpdated and improved taxonomic informationExtensive coverage of new discoveriesBody masses or body size indices for most extinct island mammalsNew figures visualizing the richness of the fossil recordThis accessible and richly illustrated textbook is written for graduate level students and professional researchers in evolutionary biology, palaeontology, biogeography, zoology, and ecology.

Condition: Slight loss top left corner, trimmed close but retaining legend beneath.in Latin and the various regions the Pope ruled or did rule, with him being venerated and crowned bottom left and the Zodiac sign for Leo. Depicts cities under the benevolent warmth of the Sun and under its favouritism; Rome, Syracuse, Ravenna, etc. Laid lined paper with ornate ball shaped watermark actual figure of the watermark not clear enough? Reverse has old light vertical fold line down centre, but not affecting the image. Very Good Genuine 16th century copper engraving. Clean in appearance, watermarked hand-made laid paper (chain paper for US buyers) the watermark looks like a papal "orb" and possibly the date '51? A little loss at top left edge and an almost invisible archival in inch Japanese tissue repair at middle top on the reverse and again paper thin in one spot at the same edge, image very clear, good strong strike indicating an early pull of this print. 27.5 x 28.5 cm *NOTE: A curious anomaly not picked up on by other examples in museum archives is a circular mark between the charioteers "Sol's" legs, a circle with a central dot, perfect in every way and shows on all the few images similar that we located in institutional libraries and/or collections but not described or seemingly noticed by other archivists? A curious meaningful addition not an error on this copy? BRITISH LIBRARY copy describes it thus: Sol riding on a chariot drawn by four horses in the clouds in top part, various ceremonies take place below including the crowning of a king the anointing of a pope, triumphal procession through arch etc; zodiac sign of Leo in oval in top centre; after Maarten de Vos. 1585.
