Paperback. Condition: New. Between 1944 and 1996, Guatemala experienced a revolution, counterrevolution, and civil war. Playing a pivotal role within these national shifts were students from Guatemala's only public university, the University of San Carlos (USAC). USAC students served in, advised, protested, and were later persecuted by the government, all while crafting a powerful student nationalism. In no other moment in Guatemalan history has the relationship between the university and the state been so mutable, yet so mutually formative. By showing how the very notion of the middle class in Guatemala emerged from these student movements, this book places an often-marginalized region and period at the center of histories of class, protest, and youth movements and provides an entirely new way to think about the role of universities and student bodies in the formation of liberal democracy throughout Latin America. …

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Collects more than sixty foundational documents from student protest from the frontlines of revolution Few people know that student protest emerged in Latin America decades before the infamous student movements of Western Europe and the U.S. in the 1960s. Even fewer people know that Central American university students authored colonial agendas and anti-colonial critiques. In fact, Central American students were key actors in shaping ideas of nation, empire, and global exchange. Bridging a half-century of student protest from 1929 to 1983, this source reader contains more than sixty texts from Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Costa Rica, including editorials, speeches, manifestos, letters, and pamphlets. Available for the first time in English, these rich texts help scholars and popular audiences alike to rethink their preconceptions of student protest and revolution. The texts also illuminate key issues confronting social movements today: global capitalism, dispossession, privatization, development, and state violence. Paperback. Condition: New. Reframing disability, power, and identity in Latin America's complex histories.Histories of Disability in Latin America offers a sweeping reexamination of disability's place in the region's past, bringing together original scholarship by historians and anthropologists to illuminate how bodies, minds, and the concept of difference have been understood across centuries of Latin American history. Edited by Heather Vrana and David Carey Jr., this volume foregrounds the lived experiences, agency, and social meanings of disability in a region too often marginalized in global disability studies. With contributions and case studies based on archival and ethnographic research, the book illustrates how colonialism, slavery, war, industrialization, imperialism, and revolution have generated both disability and distinctive conceptions of disability. Rather than applying rigid Western frameworks, contributors examine Indigenous and Afro-Latin American terminologies and epistemologies to explore how societies have made sense of bodily difference, care, and capacity. In doing so, they critically engage medicalized and deficit-based interpretations that have long dominated historical and scholarly narratives. This collection shifts the center of inquiry to Latin America, interrogates presentist assumptions, and reconsiders the historical emergence of disability through the prisms of race, class, gender, and power. Histories of Disability in Latin America engages and expands key debates in both disability studies and Latin American historiography. This book invites readers to rethink what disability has meant-and continues to mean-across time and place. It is essential reading for those interested in the entanglements of embodiment, identity, and the historical forces that have shaped life in the Americas.…
