Condition: Nuevo. Los busardos o gavilanes, como se les llama popularmente en gran partede América Latina, son aves rapaces o de presa más pequeñas que águilasy menos ágiles que halcones. Son depredadores generalistas, atrapandomayoritariamente roedores, aves, reptiles e insectos sobre el suelo,rara vez en el aire, capturando desde un posadero en un árbol o posteo volando a media altura y cayendo en picado sobre su presa. Existen 28 especies de busardos o gavilanes del género Buteo, que tienesu origen en el continente americano, pero que actualmente muestrauna amplia distribución en el mundo, con doce especies en Américadel Sur, siete en América del Norte, de las cuales dos migran aAmérica del Sur (Buteo swainsoni y B. platypterus) y una (B. lagopus) quecomparte con Europa-Asia; cinco especies en África, una en Madagascar, otra en Asia y otra más que comparten Asia y África y otra compartidaentre Europa y Asia (Thiollay, 1994). Varias especies han colonizado islas, por lo cual no sorprende que tambiénun busardo del género Buteo llegara a las Islas Galápagos.
