Pero pronto discrepando del naturalismo y el realismo psicológico, abandona la compañía. Independizado totalmente, Meyerhold llegó a ser el primer director teatral en un sentido moderno. Su labor renovadora alcanzó todas las facetas teatrales: cambió la disposición de la sala alterando las relaciones actor-público; ; experimentó en la escenografía, yendo de las más sutiles estilizaciones al constructivismo; fundó estudios y talleres para la formación del actor, intentando sacarlo del anquilosamiento del teatro burgués y aristocrático del siglo XIX y llevarlo a la máxima expresividad requerida por el actor moderno; modificó el espacio escénico, incorporó las enseñanzas del teatro Nô japonés y del teatro chino; intentó la utilización de elementos del music-hall, del circo y del cine (fue precursor del happening), experimentó con el ritmo musical y el movimiento de los actores. Todas sus investigaciones conducían a un solo objetivo: devolver al teatro su teatralidad, su convencionalidad.
