L'ouvrage, qui fait suite à une monographie sur le même sujet parue l'année précédente (De la logique morbide. Extrospection délirante et genèse d'autosuggestion par introspection. Lyon, Storck, 1902), devait permettre de mieux comprendre la vie mentale normale et ce qui la sépare de la vie mentale morbide, et de déboucher sur des thérapeutiques psychologiques. Ce travail aurait dû être suivi de trois autres (Le syllogisme morbide, L'émotion morbide, La création intellectuelle morbide) ainsi que d'un manuel. Nicolae Vaschide (1874-1907), originaire de Bucarest, enseigne la psychologie dans cette ville avant de se rendre à Paris, sur l'invitation du pédagogue et psychologue Alfed Binet : il travaille dans le laboratoire psychologie physiologique de la Sorbonne dont Binet est directeur adjoint et publie plusieurs articles en collaboration avec ce dernier puis rejoint le laboratoire de psychologie expérimentale d'Édouard Toulouse à l'asile de Villejuif, où il rencontre Claude Vurpas. Avec ce denier, il mène plusieurs travaux sur le délire et les hallucinations et s'intéresse à la psychopathologie des monstres humains. Vaschide occupait une place de premier plan dans la vie scientifique nationale et internationale lorsqu'il décéda, en 1907, avant d'avoir pu soutenir sa thèse. Couverture usagée et roussie.
