The main Sydney Railway Station in 1888, with many trains and tracks, engraved from the drawing by William Crothers Fitler (1857-1915) for the grand publication, Picturesque Atlas of Australasia, which was published between 1886 and 1888 to commemorate 100 years of settlement and development since the First Fleet arrived in Sydney in 1788. The scenes of towns, country, flora, fauna, industry and lifestyle provide a wonderful record of early colonial life. In many cases these were the only antique prints of colonial days and are still some of the finest ever done. While some of the important scenes were engraved on a full page and inserted later during biding of the publication, the initial publication of this grand work was in parts, bound in paper, and most of the engravings appeared within text - as with this interesting engraving. These engravings have always been appreciated and have been cut out, coloured and framed for further enjoyment.
