Barba fut fertile en rebondissements : soldat puis déserteur, emprisonné sous la révolution puis évadé, condamnés plusieurs fois pour contrefaçons, publications licencieuses ou faillite. Il vit męme son magasin détruit par un incendie (en 1828). Il finira par céder son fonds ŕ son premier commis, Christophe Tresse.
