Burggraf Heinrich I. von Regensburg, gründete um 1130 ursprünglich in Walderbach ein Augustiner-Chorherrenstift, das aber 1143 sein Sohn, Burggraf Otto I. von Regensburg, in ein Zisterzienserklosterumwandelte. Es zählt damit zu den ältesten der zwölf Zisterzienserklöster Bayerns.
