Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. Originally published in 1931, this book contains an estimation of 'the present situation in Hamlet criticism'. Waldock illustrates Hamlet's unique position as a successful play that still provokes real uncertainty about its protagonist's motivation, and examines how scholars have interpreted important passages differently over time. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Hamlet and its interpretation.

paperback. Condition: Very Good in Wrappers. No Jacket. Cambridge. 1964. Cambridge University Press. Reprinted Paperback Edition. Very Good in Wrappers. 149 pages. paperback. Cover design by Cecil Keeling. keywords: Literary Criticism John Milton England Literature Poetry. DESCRIPTION - According to Milton, Paradise Lost was an epic about Man's first disobedience and the fruit Of that forbidden tree, whose mortal taste Brought death into the world, and all our woe With loss of Eden, till one greater Man Restore us. Later critics have looked behind that statement because of a feeling that certain parts of the story conflict with the stated aim. They have sought `deeper' overall meanings: that it is a poem about Renaissance energy, about man's `existential' need to be forever making decisions, and so on. Professor Waldock will have none of this: Milton's aim was what he said it was. But because Milton in his poem recounts the difficult first chapters of Genesis at such length and in such imaginative detail, he disconcerts his readers. Milton's poetic power gives Adam and Eve at the moment of the Fall such human attractiveness that it is impossible to condemn them. The magnificent figure of Satan is consistently more appealing than Milton's God; and by a fatal lack of literary tact God himself is presented directly and quoted at length. This leads Milton into absurd literalisms, and sometimes into evasiveness and self-contradiction. Hence the conflict between what Milton meant to do and what the poem actually does. Professor Waldock appeals to the reader's direct and unprompted response to the poetry; and he conducts his critical arguments with great courtesy and wit. Dr F. R. Leavis said of Paradise Lost and Its Critics that it was `by far the best book on Milton I have read.' inventory #37447.
