Quarter-brown calf over gray silk moire boards, silk moire endpapers, t.e.g., gilt lettering on spine (expertly rebacked & recornered, minor dustsoiling, edgewear), still VG copy. First edition of one of this uncommon children's books illustrated by Dugald Stewart Walker (1883-1937), featuring the noted Virginia artist's plates and illustrations evoking Rackham, Dulac & Aubrey Beardsley, but still very much his work. This volume precedes his 1914 Andersen's Fairy Tales, and although quite popular at the galleries in Europe, was less successful in the United States, although he always remained based out of Richmond, VA. Mackay (1876-1961) was a noted poet and author who had moved to Paris following her marriage to Archibald Mackay, and would remain their most of her life, until her death in New York.
