VERY GOOD CONDITION .minor signs of use.clean, Solid, bright ; white & red titles on tan paper COVERS, showing 3 hores riders in native american attire. ; 38 plates, 49 text ilust photos; 350 pages; astonishing: the Ghost-Dance Religion. Investigating every Indi…an uprising from Pontiac to the 1890's, every Indian distance to aggression, every incident of importance. Mooney discovered a cultural pattern: a messianic religion that permeated leaders and warriors from Tecumseh and his brother The Prophet on up to the Plains tribes that revived the Ghost-Dance in the 1880s and 90s. The message was: abandon the ways of the Whites; go back to Indian ways; an Indian messiah is coming; the Indian dead are to be resurrected- indeed, some have already returned; and the Whites are to be killed by the Spirits. Mooney made an exhaustive study of this cult, the rise of its latest version, diffusion to the Plains, and relevance to the medicine man Sitting Bull and others.Indexed.MANY PAGES OF DESCRIPTIONS, ETC BY PRIMARY SOURCES.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 208, xx, [1] ; illustrated, 4 in color ; 21 cm. ; John Horace McFarland (1859-1948) was an American master printer and horticulturist. Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. His w…ide-ranging achievements made a lasting impact on printing processes, horticulture, and environmental protection. During McFarland's early years, his father operated a nursery and a small weekly newspaper in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. McFarland worked in both of his father's businesses as a youth. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society.
