The author built and sailed the Aileach, the first Highland Galley in three hundred years, for historical and nautical research, and for adventure and challenge. The author recounts both the inaugural voyage from Ireland through the tangle of the Isles to Stornoway in 1991, and the second voyage north to the Faroes Islands in 1992. The Scotsman calls this "A journey of discovery to learn more about Scotland's rich maritime past.".
