Some small Illustrations in text and numerous Tables and Lists. Some losely inserted newpaper cuttings. Contemporary full straight grained dark blue morocco. Blind tooled borders. Gilt decorations and titles. All edges gilt. Very good condition. Some shelf wear, rubbing and bumping. Volume 1 with some damp staining. Both volumes show mild age darkening and occasional mild foxing. Overall a very nice set in a sturdy attractive binding.

First Edition. iv, 270 pp., contemporary half-calf with marbled boards, title gilt on black label on spine, appendices, faint yellowing, tear across page 121 without any loss, otherwise copy in very good condition. Walsh arrived in Constantinople in 1821 as chaplain to Lord Strangford's embassy. The journey described in this work took place in 19824/5 and describes his return to England. In 1830 Walsh returned to Constantinople and remained there until 1835. Blackmer 1764.

Frontis and additional engraved title page and map included in the list of plates. Vol. 1: xxxvi, 84pp plus [47] leaves of plates. Vol. 2: 100 pp plus 49 plates (including engraved title page and frontis) plus double page map of the Mediterranean, which is dated 1840. Circa 1840.; Folio 13" - 23" tall.

Thomas Allom (illustrator). first series and second series bound in a single volume along with volume 1 of The Shores & Islands of the Mediterranean - 84pp+100pp+96pp with b/w plates and 2x maps - half-leather with green cloth boards - raised and gilt-stamped bands to spine - binding moderately rubbed and soiled - light wear and chipping to edges - leather is generally very tidy - olive endpapers - preliminary pages and content edges moderately foxed - slight foxing to content margins including plates - tissue guards present and despite the foxed margins the plates are clean and crisp - text block edges slightly soiled/foxed - a solid binding despite a few gutters that are slightly pulled - First Series and Second Series of Constantinople by Thomas Allom bound with the first volume of The Shores & Islands of the Mediterranean by Wright which has the decorative title page present - a heavy book which will require extra postage overseas - please email for details - many more photos available.

Moderate foxing, edges of boards rubbed and worn at corners. Lacking the 2 page map of the Turkish and Ottoman Empire, otherwise complete with all blanks and extra titles.No dates- 1839 & 1840. Very nice copy of this account of Constantinople in the early 19th century. Size: 4to.

Davis, A lovely unsophisticated copy in the publisher's boards. "Walsh arrived in Constantinople in 1821 as chaplain to Lord Strangfords' embassy. In 1830 Walsh returned to Constantinople and remained there until 1835" (Navari). This work describes his return journey to England after the British embassy, giving an excellent account of Istanbul and vivid travel sketches of Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary.  Atabey, 1314; cf.
