Condition: Hervorragend. Zustand: Hervorragend | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Delve into the works and mystery of an LGBTQ+ author whom historians are still trying to unravel over 200 years later.Previously known only as a quiet but intelligent wallflower friend of renowned author Mary Shelley, Mary Diana Dods is far from an ordinary 1700s daughter of an Earl. Throughout their life, they lived under three identities. First was their birth name, Mary Diana Dods. Due to the negative opinions of women authors during this time, they adopted the pseudonym, David Lyndsay, which was the pen name under which they published the majority of their work. Most intriguing of all, they fully transitioned to an additional male identity of scholar and diplomat, Walter Sholto Douglas, for the latter part of their personal life.Until Mary Shelley expert Betty T. Bennett's research in 1991, it was believed that Dods, Lyndsay, and Sholto Douglas were all separate individuals. By studying a series of letters sent to Shelley, Bennett discovered that all correspondents were in fact the same person. Since this research, historians have been working tirelessly to uncover the truth behind the life of this groundbreaking author whom society has forgotten. For the first time, David Lyndsay's 1825 fairy tale collection, Tales of the Wild and the Wonderful, and their acclaimed fantasy work for Blackwood's Magazine is published in one compendium under their birth name, Mary Diana Dods.

Add to basketHardback. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. London, Hurst, Robinson, & Co., 1825. First edition, first impression. Hardback. A good copy. A collection of five tales in the folklore / fairy tales vein. Comprising: "The Prediction","The Yellow Dwarf","Der Freischutz","The Fortunes of De La Pole","Lord of the Maelstrom". Quite uncommon. I hesitate to describe this as being in the original boards, because in this case that's not really a bonus. A good chunk of the paper covering is either missing or scuffed, there's a later leather spine too. Internally though it's excellent. Collector's plate to the front pastedown, C.J. Peacock. Some dustiness to the block edges. Tanning to the title page and a little fingering. No half0title. [11991, Hyraxia Books].

Add to basketFirst edition of this scarce collection of "historically important" (Bleiler) fairy and mythic tales by a significant writer of the Romantic period. Published anonymously, the collection was previously attributed to George Borrow; however, in 1980 literary scholar Betty T. Bennett confidently tied it to Douglas, using their birth name of Mary Diana Dods. Douglas often published anonymously or under the pseudonym of David Lyndsay, and publicly presented and wrote as Walter Sholto Douglas from 1827 onwards. The collection includes classic fairy tales, such as "The Yellow Dwarf", in which a princess's first born is promised to the eponymous character, tales of Scandinavian mythology, such as "The Lord of the Maelstrom", and stories based on classic invocations of devilry and supernatural predictions. The work chimed with the contemporary desire for Germanic fairy tales and was published in an American edition in 1826, and a second English edition in 1867. A single copy of the present first edition has been recorded at auction in the last 20 years. Douglas (1790-1830) was the illegitimate child of Scottish aristocrat George Douglas, 16th Earl of Morton, their illegitimacy causing their wealthy father to ignore repeated petitions for money. As a contributor to Blackwood's Magazine between 1821 and 1828, Douglas became known to Mary Shelley, and they became close, attending the same unconventional salons in London. Shelley championed their writings and was a key supporter in the publication of the present work. In 1827 Shelley also helped them elope to Paris with a pregnant mutual friend, Isabella Robinson, by providing a passport under the name Walter Sholto Douglas. Douglas and Robinson married under this guise, and the child when born was christened Adeline Douglas. In Paris, Douglas dressed exclusively as a man and entered Anglo-French society, where they were invited to the salon of Mary Clarke and came to know many prominent writers and politicians such as Stendhal, Prosper Mérimée, and Victor Hugo. Douglas appears to have been truly enamoured with Isabella, Shelley and others noting their "sick and disconsolate manner" when Isabella was seen flirting with others (Seymour, p. 393). Despite their literary talent, and Shelley "continuing to offer their work to friendly editors in England", in 1829 Douglas was brought low by financial difficulties and illnesses both physical and mental. They were sent to debtor's prison in Paris, and died after just a few months (ibid., p. 394), Isabella returning to England with Adeline in 1830. This copy is from the library of the English novelist Sir Hugh Walpole (1884-1941), with his Brackenburn gilt-embossed dark red paper book label to front pastedown, and evidence of several corners turned down. A prolific author, Walpole wrote several gothic fantasy works and supernatural short stories. Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction 1576; Wolff 601. Betty T. Bennett, Mary Diana Dods: A Gentleman and a Scholar, 1991; Geraldine Friedman "Pseudonymity, Passing, and Queer Biography: The Case of Mary Diana Dods", in Romanticism and Sexuality, 2001; Miranda Seymour, Mary Shelley, 2000. Following recent biographical practice, we use the pronouns they/theirs for Douglas. Octavo. With the half-title. Original publisher's boards, recently rebacked with maroon cloth spine, edges untrimmed. Slight wear and marking to boards, some marks within but not unpleasant, loss from top fore-corner of rear free endpaper restored. An acceptable copy in original boards.
