That's all we needed to know: this would be a smart and essential tool. But allow us to quote from the prospectus, which declares this: "A book of utmost importance for the theory and aesthetics of typefaces. Boast much? Still, this is a fantastic reference ripe for stealing from. It ends with a handsome set of roman caps that someone should turn into a face if it's not been done already. A like-new copy of one of the foundational classics of lettering and type design, this one belonged to Max Caflisch and has his penciled comments and notations (in German) throughout. Condition: Used. We thought this came from one place but we were wrong. We don't know where it comes from or how it was originally released by Walter Käch. (Here he spells is Kaech. Maybe his pen ran out of umlauts?) Regardless of where it comes from, it shows the proportional regularity in Roman capitals and the resulting relationship for determining the lowercase letter height as determined by Kaech. Or, by Käch. A fascinating thing from the collection of Max Caflisch-and for some reason it comes with a film negative of the diagram. Very good 454.

This one is an exceedingly rare 1961 educational portfolio conceived, lettered, and designed by the legendary lettering master and Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich educator Walter Käch. It serves as a rigorous structural blueprint for lettering construction and the twelve plates (plus title leaf) systematically dissect the geometry of Normalgrotesk (Wide Block Lettering), revealing how modern, stark sans-serif letterforms directly inherit their visual balance, optical weights, and proportions from classical Roman square capitals. It was created exclusively as an internal instructional handout for a three-day vocational workshop in Bern, sponsored by the Swiss federal labor agency (BIGA) for master trade instructors of sign-makers and painters. In 1964, the sheets were issued by Verlag des Schweizerischen Maler- und Gipsermeister-Verbandes (Publishing House of the Swiss Association of Master Painters and Plasterers) of Zurich and more recently served as the source for Dinamo's digital revivalABC Walter.
