Original red pebbled cloth with gilt lettering and publisher's device on spine, blind-stamped decor on covers; protected by modern mylar. Frontispiece engraving with tissue guard. "In this volume will be found, besides other papers, an account of Captain Wilson's Survey, for which the necessary funds were supplied by Miss Burdett Coutts; and of the excavations of Jerusalem itself by Captain Warren, illustrated by plans and woodcuts." (Editor's Preface). Beautifully illustrated volume supplying views of the excavations, maps and plans as well as in-text woodcuts of artifacts. Two thirds of the book cover Jerusalem, the Holy City, while the remaining part describe the explorations in that part of the country is considered the Holy Land. Very light wear along edges of binding with very light fraying at head and tail of spine. Frontispiece, with tissue guard, and title page loose but present. Block lightly age-toned.
