Danach arbeitete er fünfzehn Jahre als Korrespondent, Werbeleiter und Redakteur bei Illustrierten. Er veröffentlichte über 150 Erzählungen, Glossen und Essays, bevor er im Alter von vierzig Jahren sein erstes Buch schrieb. Im Jahr 1952 schrieb er den Kommentar zu Luis Trenkers Kurzfilm Kleine Kletterfahrt. Seine ab etwa 1960 veröffentlichten Bergbücher mit Routenbeschreibungen, Höhenprofilen, Skizzen und großformatigen Fotos vieler Fotografen setzten Maßstäbe. Bei einigen Bänden hat Pause mit anderen Autoren zusammengearbeitet, beispielsweise mit Jürgen Winkler bei dem Band Im extremen Fels. In seiner Buchreihe sind vereinzelt auch Werke erschienen, an denen er nur mitgewirkt hat, beispielsweise Im steilen Eis von Erich Vanis. Später hat sein Sohn Michael Pause einige Bände neu bearbeitet, beispielsweise die Münchner Hausberge oder die Zürcher Hausberge. 2015 erschien die erste Aktualisierung des Klassikers Im extremen Fels durch Christoph Klein, 2017 die Aktualisierung des Klassikers Wandern im Bayerwald durch Isabelle Auer. He then worked for fifteen years as a correspondent, advertising manager and editor at magazines. He published over 150 stories, glosses and essays before writing his first book at the age of forty. In 1952, he wrote the commentary on Luis Trenker's short film Kleine Kletterfahrt. His mountain books, published from around 1960 onwards, with route descriptions, altitude profiles, sketches and large-format photos by many photographers, set standards. Pause has collaborated with other authors on some volumes, for example with Jürgen Winkler on the volume Im extrem Fels. In his book series, there have also been isolated works in which he has only contributed, for example Im steile Eis by Erich Vanis. Later, his son Michael Pause reworked some volumes, such as Munich's local mountains or Zurich's local mountains. In 2015, the first update of the classic Im ex was released.
