"'Our foremost electrician - greater even than Edison' - a famous contemporary said of Nikola. Tesla was born in a bustling pastor's home in Smiljan, Croatia, in 1856, and he died in a room at the Hotel New Yorker in 1943 - alone with his carrier pigeons resting in baskets on his desk. In this full-length biography by Helen Walters, Tesla's interest in science is seen as he sits a by a flowing creek, vaguely sensing the power he constructs a water wheel. Later as a man he invents the principle of rotary magnetic fields in the apparatus used for harnessing power from Niagara Falls. Dr. Walters tells of how as a boy Nikola was able to solve mathematical problems in his head and his conflict with his father who wanted Nikola to become a pastor like himself. In 1884, Tesla landed in emmigrated to New York where he planned to introduce alternating current to Edison who did not approve as it interfered with his plans of profiteering from direct current's inefficiencies. Ultimately, it was George Westinghouse who finally gave him a million dollars for his AC patents. Westinghouse battled against Thomas Edison and the young General Electric company. Helen Walters brings the characters and events alive with the dramatic stories behind Tesla's inventions. His new forms of dynamos, induction coils, transformers, condensers, arc and incandescent lamps, etc. This tremendously imaginative and energetic individual, who whenever, but especially on his birthdays, presented an electrical demonstration in public, appearing in evening suit with long tails and a tall silk hat. Far ahead of his time, the story reads near science fiction. The Federal Burau of investigation Office of Alien Property (terrestrial enemies, not e.t.) locked his papers in a vault. The FBI it is said were concerned he might have in his notes, secrets for 'producing a death ray, utilizing the sun's power, or for sending energy as invisible beams.'"
