Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. Cartier, Edd [jacket] (illustrator). First Edition. New York: Gnome Press, 1950. First Edition. Introduction by Willy Ley. Edited by Martin Greenberg, this copy signed, inscribed and presented by him to Arthur C. Clarke. Octavo, 351 pp. Purple cloth-backed gray cloth boards, with silver spine titling and blindstamped launching-spaceship and star motif on purple margin. Pictorial dustjacket by sci-fi illustration luminary Edd Cartier. A near fine book, with only minor page edge soiling and a trace of partial spine fade, in a Very Good + jacket, showing light perimeter wear. Singular copy, inscribed and presented to Arthur C. Clarke by Greenberg, with provenance of unimpeachable order accompanying the book. An increasingly classic collection of short stories by some of the now-timeless sci-fi names. Willy Ley: "Here is a different type of anthology. This book, taken in its entirety, tells a story: the conquest of space. Moving from man's first attempt to reach the moon to the exploration of the ends of the universe, these stories are among the finest ever published." - Willy Ley. Hailed by critics at the time of its publication as a quantum leap forward in both quality and concept for science fiction anthologies, Martin Greenberg's thematically edited Men Against the Stars is a collection of twelve lengthy stories whose authors read like a Who's Who of Golden Age sci-fi, including Isaac Asimov, Murray Leinster, A.E. Van Vogt, L. Ron Hubbard [Hubbard's "When Shadows Fall" is here], and E.M. Hull. Not a slap-dash aggregation to get to the printer quickly, Greenberg's collection was a thoroughly contemplated and planned project, a selection of the very finest available stories on theme, ranging back as far as 1939. Nicely complimented by a Cartier's funky pure genre period stylization jacket. A sci-fi presentation copy of the highest sort, that of a veteran and astute editor to a future superstar. Arthur C. Clarke's reputation at the time was already becoming established, and Greenberg shows the admiration in his skilled critical eye for Clarke's sci-fi talents in his presentation remark. As always, please feel free to ask questions or request additional scans. L53n. Signed, Inscribed By Editor.

One of the more bizarre conspiracy theories that emerged during the tragic Lindbergh baby kidnaping and murder was developed by a WWI veteran named Hal Walton and perpetuated for a decade by his organization, the Committee of Unwanted Lindbergh Witnesses (shortened to the Committee of Witnesses). Walton claimed that "Japanese and German army agents in league with traitors in our own government and Wall Street, ganged up on [Lindbergh] and stole his son." According to Walton, this shadowy cabal was angered by Lindbergh's relationship with China during the Sino-Japanese war and because of his association with a vaguely defined group of associates who hijacked a lucrative aviation contract with China over the German Luft Hansa Aviation Co. Furthermore, Walton also claimed that over a thousand other murders were linked to this same cabal, including the unsolved 3X murders in Queens, the two victims of the ?Red Circle Slayer,? the unsolved kidnaping and murder of a 10-year-old boy named Charles Mattson in Tacoma, WA, and the 1931 Collings Yacht Murder. In one of the broadsides offered here, corrupt New Jersey state officials are indicted for their involvement. Walton and his shadowy band of supporters continued pushing their claims long after public interest in the Lindbergh case had waned, and following the end of WWII, Walton was back in the press pushing conspiracies around Pearl Harbor, the relationship of Secretary of War Henry Stimson with the Axis powers, and role of J. Edgar Hoover and Herbert Hoover as Communist agents. The three items offered here, none of which we could find separately catalogued in WorldCat, include: Soldiers Against Our Children, 17th Edition. New York City: Committee of Witnesses, ca. 1937/38. 17" x 11" broadside. Penciled notation along the top reads, "Distributed at Pennsylvania Station!! - by a woman 5-10-38." Some passages underlined in pencil and marks to margins; star of David penciled next to Hal Walton's name. Boycott the Corrupt Officials of the State of New Jersey. New York City: Hal Walton, Chairman for the Committee of Witnesses, [1937]. 17" x 11" broadside printed in red. A few images showing the connection between the symbols on the Lindbergh ransom notes and those on the Japense flag and Luft Hansa airline. A few passages underlined in pencil and marks to the margins. Onward Christian Soldiers. n.p.: n.p., [193-]. An 11" x 8 ?? sheet printed landscape. Describes the conspiracy between International Bankers and Germany/Japanese agents involved in the Lindbergh kidnaping. Includes an additional note claiming that the division between Germans and Jews is being fomented by International bankers. A few passages underlined in pencil, star of David drawn to margin.
