Hardcover. 288 p. Mostly color illustrations. Since its dedication on Veteran's Day, 1982, more than 35, 000 offerings have been left at the Wall, in a variety too wide to categorize easily. This selection of the objects is a recognition of the importance of this memorial as marking the beginning of our nation's recovery from it…s longest war. Includes a complete list of the names inscribed on the Wall. 300 color photos. Photos of some of the 35, 000 offerings left at the Vietnam Wall since 1982. Copyright 1995 Reed. From Booklist The first offering to the Wall, a Purple Heart thrown into the monument's cement as it was being poured, presaged the medals, insignia, MIA bracelets, bullet casings, photographs, and flags from coffins that survivors have left at the Vietnam monument. Each night the items are warehoused and cataloged; this album portrays a sample of the 30, 000 objects commended to the dead thus far. Photographed against stark white backdrops, the artifacts vary in overt meaning: booze or money settles debts; a letter reaches out to the silence (sealed letters are never opened); mementos scrawled with signatures and explanations maintain a tangible link with the dead. What unites the variety is the private message delivered in this public space, a message palpable merely in outline to strangers not privy to the individual pain. In spite of that ambiguity, viewing these photos conveys the emotional impact of the memorial that only a personal visit to the site can exceed. With an appendix of all 58, 196 names on the Wall, this book is quite a powerful memorial on its own. Very good in good dust jacket. DJ has some wear and soiling. Sticker on back of DJ First edition. First Edition [stated]. First printing [stated]. Vazquez, Claudio (Photographer), and Taben Z (Phot (illustrator).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition light purple linen boards with blindstamped front cover decoration/illustration and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition color photographic dust jacket. Includes Foreword by Lady Bird Johnson; Foreword; Afterword by Carlto…n B. Lees; Selected Bibliography; Sources of Regional Wildflower Seed Mixtures; Index of Flowers Illustrated and Index. Profusely illustrated with color photographs and color drawings. "Wildflowers Across America is both a tribute to one of this country's loveliest natural resources and a strong plea for increasing the use of native plants and wildflowers in America's future landscaping. Once established, wildflowers take little maintenance and are an ecologically sound and low-cost way to make roadsides, park areas, golf-course roughs, or your own country garden grow and bloom. Not only does this idea spread the sheer beauty of our continent's native flora, but it helps reverse the considerable harm that has been done to our environment for decades. With water a rapidly diminishing resource in many areas of the country, it is no longer wise to continue maintaining the traditional lush lawns and decorateve shrubbery in inappropriate environments. But our biosphere suffers increasing danger as well from the huse of herbicides and chemical fertilizers that build up in the land and in the food chain. This book argues that we should let nature be our guide and get ourselves in rhythm with her teachings. However, although we have built up centuries of knowledge about the best ways to grow vegetables, fruit, and garden flowers, we seem to know next to nothing about the propagation of wildflowers. To remedy this ignorance, Lady Bird Johnson decided that the time had come to begin accumulating the same kinds of broad data for natural flora that we have for the cultivated roses and tulips in our own gardens. Accordingly, in 1982, she donated $125,000 and a few of the family's acres outside Austin, Texas, to the founding of a National Wildflower Research Center. This book is a true collaborative effort between the country's preeminent wildflower enthusiast and a prominent horticulturist who responds to her coulntless questions aobut wildflowers. Why do some thrive in some places and not in others? How do they propagate naturally ? Are all of our well loved wildflowers native to this continent or have many been introduced from other regions? In dealing with questions like these, Carlton Lees has selected relevant excerpts from the journals of seventeenth and eighteenth century plant explorers who saw this land in its pristine beauty and recorded for Old World scientists the botanical wonders of the New World. Lees also chose to illustrate some of the most beautiful representations of America's unique flora in botanical publicantions of this early period. But one of the major treats of this volume is the superabundance of beautiful wildflowers show in the wild and in their true, natural color. Not only are carefully identified flower portraits scattered throughout this book, but an unparalleled 105-page album featuring the best-loved and most spectacular of America's wildflowers has been selected by Les Line from the world of the nation's best nature photographers." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Line, Les (photography); Wageman, James (book design) (illustrator).
