Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. This is "Winchester Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. Swithin" by the Very Rev. N. Sykes, Late Dean of Winchester. The book was published by Pitkin Pictorials, Ltd. in its "Pride of Britain" Series. For years Pitkin Pictorials, Ltd. published excellent series of illustrated guide books. Alas, the company seems to have closed, and so these lovely books (issued in paperback booklet format) are now all out of print. This particular copy of "Winchester Cathedral" was issued in 1976. It is 24 pages in length, with an informative text, and a superb array of fine color, as well as black-and-white, halftone photographs; there is one excellent ground plan on the verso of the front cover. The front cover has a color photo of the front facade of the Cathedral, while the rear cover presents a view of the church from the south. While certainly not exhaustive in scope, this slim book is a very good introduction to the subject, giving a solid base for further reading and exploration. There is also a small assortment of interesting ephemera presented as an accompanying bundle : a slim paperback booklet of 12 pages (4 3/4" x 7 1/4") : "Izaak Walton and Winchester", which features a portrait of Izaak Walton and two views of the Izaak Walton Stained glass window; two color postcards, one showing the Winchester Cathedral Library, and the other a view of the North Transept; a leaflet welcoming visitors to the Cathedral; and a three fold leaflet in the "Winchester Cathedral Short Guide Series (No. 3) - "The Winchester Cathedral Font".
