"Der erste, welcher eine, wenn auch nur kurze Beschreibung der anatomischen Verhältnisse , d.h. der Knochen und Muskeln, beim Klumpfuß gab, und dies auf Grund seiner selbst ausgeführten Sektion, war P. Camper (1777). Er hat in seiner schon genannten Abhandlung 'Abhandlung über den besten Schuh' darüber berichtet, ebenso Jacob van der Haar (1818-1799), Oberwundarzt am Hospital s 'Hertogenbosch, dem Camper seine Befunde mitgeteilt hatte. . Erst 12 Jahre später, 1789, finden sich wieder in der Literatur Berichte über Zergliederungen von Klumpfüßen, und zwar aus der Feder von Carl Friedrich Clossius (1768-1797) und von Johann-Matthias Wantzel (1777-1800). beide wirkten in Tübingen, und beide gaben sehr genaue Beschreibungen jedes einzelnen Knochens (von einer 28jährigen Frau Clossius und von einem 13jährigen Knaben Wantzel). Die Kenntnis des "sabot de Venel" wurde zuerst in Deutschland verbreitet, und zwar durch den schon genannten Johann Mathias Wantzel, welcher in seiner Jugend wegen doppelseitiger schwerer kongenitaler Klumpfüße in Orbe durch Venel mit sehr gutem Erfolge behandelt worden war. Aber ebenso wie Venel starb auch er, bevor er die geplante vollständige Beschreibung der Venelschen Maschine veröffentlichen konnte; für diese Arbeiten lagen schon die Kupferplatten fertig gestochen vor, wie uns Jörg berichtet, welchem sie nach dem Tode Wantzels übergeben worden waren.
