Ware's unit fought its own war against the Sioux and Cheyenne in the Dakotas, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska. The 7th Iowa patrolled and fought to keep the overland trail open from Fort Kearney, Nebraska, to Fort Laramie, Wyoming. This book is an eyewitness account based on author's daily journal and his letters.

Walton (Illinois State Historian). Appendix A-C, Abbreviated Titles Cited, Notes and Index. Sparsely illustrated in black and white. Interior is somewhat age toned but clean. Page 339 has a lower edge chip and a couple more pages in the middle have a patch of rubbing at lower edge.Former gift inscription (non-author) in front. The book is quarter bound in faded red cloth with black sides and gold spine lettering. The spine ends are bumped and the cloth has a tear at bottom. The tinted red top edge is faded from sunning. The dust jacket has a few chips and tears around the edges, shelf rubbing, and light discoloration, but all is now protected in a clear cover. The spine also looks sunned. Overall a very good hardcover.
