Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Illustrated by Warre, Captain H.J. (illustrator). First Edition. "John Palliser, a lively Irishman, set out a hundred years ago in command of an expedition to explore the vast land that is now western Canada. The expedition's purpose was to determine whether the country was suitable for settlement, and whether it could be linked with the British colony on the St. Lawrence, and with the Pacific Coast. They studied the difficult British route by river, lake, and portage from Lake Superior to Red River. They travelled by horse, Red River cart, snow-shoe, and dog train over wide stretches of the unpeopled prairie between Red River and the Rocky Mountains. They searched for practicable passes through the mountains; among those they put on record are the Kicking Horse Pass and Vermilion Pass." - dust jacket. x, 310 p. Index. Maps. Black and white photographic plates. Book clean, tight and unmarked with light wear to original brown cloth. Somewhat above-average wear to unclipped dust jacket now in glossy new archival-grade protection. A quality example. ; Dust Jacket; 8vo.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition Large folio; approx. size of the binding: 14 in. x 21 1/4 in., title-page; rare dedication page (to the Hudson's Bay Company); pp. [1]-5. Illustrated with 20 colored lithographic views, on 16 sheets. These include: The American Village (Oregon City), Buffalo Hunting on the Western Prairies, Fort Vancouver, Fort George (Oregon), Fort Garry (Winnipeg), and the map. This is the rare issue with the colored "Sketches in North America and the Oregon Territory" plates; in most copies these are lightly tinted in monochrome. The outline map shows routes in red and blue. In the original pebbled dark green cloth binding, with gilt lettered titling on the front cover: "Warre's Sketches in North America." Professionally re-backed. Three plates (7, 8, 14) each show a tiny hole in the paper sheet. An impressive, fresh, clean copy, much better than usual. "Made in 1845, when war between England and the United States over the Oregon boundary seemed imminent, this trip by Capt. Warre across the northern Rockies to Puget Sound must have had some military purpose a better fate attended the views he had painted and were here magnificently reproduced; they remain the only western color-plates comparable in beauty to those by Bodmer accompanying Maximilian's Travels. The dedication forming prelim. pages 3 and 4 was not issued in all copies." Howes, p. 615, W-114; Sabin 101455; Wagner-Camp 157.
