Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the technical discoveries and institutional decisions that shaped the mechanisms of the Philadelphia's City Hall's famed astronomical clock, built between 1899-1902, and weighing over 50,000 pounds. The author, a specialist in horology, gives an insider's narrative of one of the largest and most accurate timekeeping devices of its era, a project that presented the challenge of having the dials more than 280 feet above the street below. He discusses the methods used to operate the clock and its dials, arguing the clock was a historic success of the new electrical technology. Along the way, the author details the bureaucratic struggles, inaccuracies, and political interference that plagued the clock's inception and installation. Ultimately, this book provides a rich account of both the science and politics behind one of Philadelphia's architectural landmarks. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …

Eisenhower, presided over the transformation of the United States from a fragile agrarian republic into a continental power and then a global superpower. Washington established the precedents of the office, including the cabinet system and the voluntary surrender of power after two terms. The early presidents from Adams through John Quincy Adams, most of them Virginians or Adamses, defined the limits of federal authority, doubled the nationâs territory through the Louisiana Purchase, and confronted the strains of the War of 1812. Andrew Jacksonâs election ushered in mass democracy and a more assertive executive, while the antebellum presidents struggled, and largely failed, to contain the sectional conflict over slavery. Abraham Lincoln preserved the Union through civil war and ended slavery, and the Reconstruction and Gilded Age presidents who followed wrestled with the unfinished work of emancipation and the rise of industrial capitalism. Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson expanded the powers of the presidency in the Progressive Era and drew the nation into world affairs. Franklin D. Roosevelt then led the country through the Great Depression and the Second World War, serving an unprecedented four terms before the Twenty-second Amendment limited the office to two. Harry S. Truman and Eisenhower, in turn, shaped the postwar order, committing the United States to containment of the Soviet Union and to a standing role in international affairs.…
