Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Septuagint is the most influential of the Greek versions of the Torah, the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. The exact circumstances of its creation are uncertain, but different versions of a legend about the miraculous nature of the translation have existed since antiquity. Beginning in the Letter of Aristeas, the legend describes how Ptolemy Philadelphus commissioned seventy-two Jewish scribes to translate the sacred Hebrew scriptures for his famous library in Alexandria. Subsequent variations on the story recount how the scribes, working independently, produced word-for-word, identical Greek versions. In the course of the following centuries, to our own time, the story has been adapted and changed by Jews, Christians, Muslims and pagans for many different reasons: to tell a story, to explain historical events and to lend authority to the Greek text for the institutions that used it. This book offers the first account of all of these versions over the last two millennia, providing a history of the uses and abuses of the legend in various cultures around the Mediterranean.

Paperback. Condition: FINE. 119pp. Sewn binding in printed wraps. Spine a bit toned, text tanned as expected, very clean and sharp otherwise. Scarce in trade. 'Galen's commentary on Hippocrates' 'peri aeron, udaton, topon' has not been found in the original Greek or in the translation made from Greek into Syriac by Hunain ibn Ishq, but is extant in an Arabic translation made by Hubaysh al-A'sam (ninth century), a Hebrew translation made from the Arabic in 1299 by Solomon ha-Me'ati, and, finally, a Latin translation of the Hebrew text, made by Moses Amram Alatino (1529-1605). Only the last text, which is four removes from the original Greek, has been available in print; it can be found in the ninth Juntine edition of Galen's works. Wasserstein provides a critical edition of the Hebrew text, which exists in only one manuscript (Oxford, Bodleian Library, Opp. Add. 18 fol.). He furnishes the Hebrew text with a literal English translation and writes an extensive commentary, which is conveniently placed below the text. This commentary is above all philological: the Hebrew, which is often barely intelligible because of its closeness to the Arabic, is explained. For the lemmata from Hippocrates, the original Greek, the two Arabic versions, the 'younger' Latin translation and the Hebrew translation of Nathan ha-Me'ati (father of Solomon) are brought into use; for Galen's commentary W. unfortunately makes little use of the recently discovered Arabic version (Cairo, Tal'at, tibb 550), but he refers to Alatino's Latin translation, which, at least, is a witness to another Hebrew manuscript. Sometimes citations of, and parallels to, the text of Galen's commentary in later medical writers provide guidance for interpreting the text. Amongst these writers are Erotianus and Oribasius amongst the Greeks, 'All ibn Rabbn al-Tabari, 'Ali ibn Ridw?n and 'Abd al-Latif al-Baghd?di in Arabic, and Moses ibn Ezra and Maimonides in Hebrew. W. collects the Arabic and Hebrew citations of, and references to the work in an appendix. In spite of these aids there are still many passages in the Hebrew which remain difficult to understand. W. is scrupulous in pointing out the words which make no sense to him, and adds several new words (especially transliterations of Arabic terms) to the standard dictionaries of the Hebrew language. Commentary on the medical content is not extensive, and is usually restricted to the citation of passages on the same topics in other Greek medical works. W. appears to have the Classicist especially in mind in writing this work. He quotes extensively from Greek writings without providing translations. Until the Arabic text of Galen's commentary on Hippocrates 'peri aeron, udaton, topon' is published, W.'s edition is the nearest we will be able to come to the original Greek text. Occasionally the Hebrew translation gives a term 'used by the Christians' alongside the Arabic term for a phenomenon (sec pp. 29 and 83), but otherwise there is no evidence that the translator has been other than faithful to his source. W. takes pains to uncover the original Greek terminology wherever possible. He identifies citations from Hesiod's Erga and Homer's Iliad in Galen's commentary (pp. 81 and 85). A reference in the text to a writer on meteorology called 'Nicodemus' has not been identified, and the name might have been given in error for Theophrastus. W. concludes his edition with notes on the ha-Me'ati family and their translations, a substantial bibliography, an index of names and subjects, and indexes of Hebrew and Greek terms and names. The edition is presented clearly, and the Hebrew, Greek and Roman typefaces (the Arabic is in transliteration) are pleasant to read. (C.S.F. Burnett review in The Classical Review.).
