Essays on the History of Ethnic Relations W. George Lovell notes that MacLeod's forte has characteristically been that rare ability to give shape and explanation to an accumulated drift of events. MacLeod identifies several profound and enduring processes at work, and sees them operating in such a way as to produce patterns which reflect a marked diversity and regional variation in the nature of the colonial experience. More than any other contributor, MacLeod spells out a course for future research, research which he anticipates (with singular intellectual maturity) will precipitate the heavy revision, if not demolition (p. 190) of his own work as well as that of others.[ inventory #13573.

USADO / GEBRAUCHT / USED. Perhaps more than any social group in recent memory, native people in highland Chiapas have been sub-jected to a sustained onslaught of anthropological scrutiny. Yet virtually all of these studies represent a set of variations on a single, theme: the community-as-tribe, the town as social and moral universe. Significantly absent from this discussion has been the problem of history. How did the Tzotzil and Tzeltan communities in central Chiapas be-come what they are today and how has the past affected their present position in Mexican society? By combining historical inquiry with anthropological fieldwork, Robert Wasserstrom addresses this question in a revealing and unconven-tional way. As the first comprehensive socioeconomic history of the relation between mestizo and Indian societies through four-and-a-half centuries, this book is also the first anthropological study to take into account the effects of social policies and economic factors on the life of the central Chiapas Indians. By the late sixteenth century, most of the differences which may have characterized native fiefdoms before the Conquest had disappeared under the combined pressures of demographic catastrophe and political collapse. Only during the nineteenth century did these communities acquire the distinct ethnic identities that later fired the imaginations of anthropologists. As a result, most scholarly research in the areaincluding the results of longterm fieldwork conducted by the Harvard Chiapas Project and its counterpart at the University of Chicagomust now undergo significant revision. This book provides a model for such revision, showing that a reassessment may only be accomplished by treating anthropology and history as a sin-gle enterprisean enterprise that takes into account the forces and pressures that continue to reorient Indian life. Robert Wasserstrom is Senior Research Associate at the Center for the Social Sciences, Columbia University.
