Seller: BOOKHOME SYDNEY, Annandale Sydney, NSW, Australia
Paperback small, good plus condition, stapled pamphlet, flexible covers, three full-page drawings, staples rusted, spine ends little rubbed, minor edgewear. 44 pp. From the introduction by editor George Mackaness: The whole story of Thomas Watling - for such was the writer's name - was pieced together with great skill and ingenuity and published in 1938 in a privately printed volume entitled 'Thomas Watling, Limner of Dumfries' by Mr. (now Sir) Hugh Gladstone of Dumfries. On page 13 there is a facsimile of the title page of Thomas Watling's letters (from the original in the Mitchell Library, dated 1794). Thomas Watling, one of the earliest artists to portray New South Wales, was transported for forgery in 1790 and was the anonymous author. This is a new edition by Review Publications in 1979 as one of the new series of Australian Historical Monographs (this particular facsimile previously published in 1945.).

Framed and glazed in a gold and green frame with a double bevelled mount featuring triple hand rulings. Mount window 170 x 105 mm. Size overall 320 x 255 mm. Although the paper a little toned it appears in very good condition but not examined out of the frame. The only reference I have found to this work is on the website of the Yale Center for British Art, in the USA. Is this a later reduction from: Six views in Clevedon: and its neighbourhood? Hand-coloured Lithographs, c1840. Abbey, J.R. Scenery, 99, which is described as "Oversize". 32 x 25.5 cm.

Watling, Thomas (after) and Samuel John Neele (engraver) (illustrator). 1st edition. Original hand-coloured engraving, 260mm x 215mm, published in 'An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales', 1802. Near fine condition The engraving is from an on-the-spot pencil sketch by Thomas Watling, a convict transported to Australia in 1792 for forging banknotes. Impressed by his artistic work, the Governor of New South Wales, John Hunter, gave Watling a conditional pardon in 1796. The artist spent the next four years in NSW painting landscapes, topographical views and drawing birds including the Lyrebird, known as 'Menura novaehollandiae'.
