Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Autograph Letter Signed. Octavo. 3pp. Neatly written in ink on printed stationary (Lithographed by Latimer Bros. & Seymour): Office of the Contractors of the Union Pacific Railway Company, Eastern Division. Wyandotte, Kansas, November 7, 1863. In the original mailing envelope with a "Wyandotte, Kas Dec 7" postmark and rate mark in manuscript: "Due 6c". Addressed to a friend in Fairbanks, Iowa. Near fine. Written about one year after his having served as a Lieutenant in the California 2nd Infantry (from September 1861 through October 1862), Grove Watson discusses his children and frequent travels since the death of his wife, and that he had recently accepted a position with the railroad in Kansas: " I think I wrote you the last letter while in the Army of California. I resigned from the Army one year ago. I left from N. York last February and reached Kansas last September and think I shall get as [far as] Iowa by next spring. If I do, I will call at Fairbanks I have been roving ever since my wife died. Never contented more than a few months in a place, and I fear it will ever be thus. I left Jennie with my sister and Eva is with my mother-in-law they are both well and happy. Jennie calls my sister Mama and don't realize the difference. I shall return in the spring to California but will endeavor to call at Fairbanks before I leave. I am now engaged in the office of the R.R. Co. heading this letter. We have some 1,000 hands to work and pay them $1.50 per day, cash, every 30 days. Very good wages for the western country I now get $75 dollars per month and boarded, some better. I am promised the 2nd train as conductor, if I will remain on the road ." In 1863 The Union Pacific Railway Company, Eastern Division, received a mandate from Congress to construct a second southerly branch of the transcontinental railroad alongside the Union Pacific Railroad, principally across Kansas. The line became the Kansas Pacific Railway. Watson had enlisted at San Francisco and served just over one year as 2nd Lieutenant in the California 2nd Infantry, Company B, having resigned on October 20, 1862. An interesting, beautifully preserved letter with rare firsthand content relating to the early construction of the Transcontinental Railroad through Kansas.
