8vo [22 x 14.5 cm]; x, 11-236 pp, frontis (the only known portrait of Vitus Bering), 7 foldout maps from early sources, foldout plate of sea-lions, endpaper maps showing route, bibliog, index. original green cloth with gilt spine title lettering, dj (not price clipped), very minor rubbing at lower edge but a clean fine copy. Based in part on a previously lost manuscript, this is an account of Bering's famous expedition that established the true position of America in relation to Asia, showing that the two continents were not connected, and brought back the first authentic account of the natives of the Aleutian islands and the American mainland. Translated from the Danish work of the 1733-1743 expedition by M. A. Michael, who also provides an excellent historical introduction.
