Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 135 pages, illustrated. "President Polk had asked John Appleton, one of his aides on the trip, to keep a daily journal. Appleton's Journal, numbering 135 manuscript pages, far exceeded Polk's forty-page allowance and afterwards became separated from the presidental diary. Generations of historians have had but this scanty knowledge of the existence of Appleton's rare and illuminating account of Polk's wartime travels north for Union. Now, for the first time, Appleton's Journal is presented to the public, and its publication is accompanied by a generous selection of Polk's correspondence detailing advance preparations for his presidential tour." FINE HARDCOVER, FINE DUST JACKET. Still in original shrinkwrap. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

In the introduction, Archibald Hanna places the Mexican War in its proper historiographical context. Hanna makes it clear that Mexican and U.S. scholars have generally neglected the episode although newer works have assessed its causes and consequences more comprehensively. Wayne Cutler then presents an elegant account of President Polk's wartime tour of New England, outlining the president's motives in light of New England's opposition to the war and at the same time providing the reader a wonderful view of contemporary life. Miguel E. Soto includes a highly informative study of monarchist intrigues during the war, giving much~needed insight into the Mexican side of the war and particularly the role of Spain and of Mariano Paredes. John S. D. Eisenhower approaches the Mexican War by comparing it disfavorably with World War II and other engagements; his description of the disharmony between Polk and his generals, Taylor and Scott, illustrates weakness in policy formation as well as unbelievable egotism on the part of the president. Finally, Douglas W. Richmond provides an insight into the life of a soldier in the war by including selections from the letters of Andrew Trussell, a Mississippi volunteer. Trussell's complaints of homesickness are typical, but his curiosity about Mexico and his ability to write about his experiences are not. The Mexican War was devastating to Mexico's confidence in its national institutions, and in the United States the war was not completely popular and has today produced something resembling collective guilt. Even today the war remains as an immediate barrier toward completely friendly relations between the two countries. Perhaps this collection of essays will help to heal the wounds that have festered for more than a hundred years.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The eleventh volume of the Correspondence of James K. Polk contains some of the most consequential and interesting material in the series. Failure to restore diplomatic relations with Mexico, the advent of the Mexican-American war, British preparations for war over the Oregon country, the signing of the Oregon Treaty, passage of key domestic legislation, and Democratic losses in the fall state and congressional elections dominate the military and political subjects of the correspondence. In prior volumes, Polk's letters focused almost entirely on politics and so left his private concerns largely untreated. Writing from the President's House, he made press copies of all of his outgoing correspondence and so recorded a more expansive range of his interests. Letters relating to his extended family, his purchase of a Nashville residence, and his addition of slaves to his Mississippi plantation offer a more personal view of the nation's eleventh president.
