Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Wayne H. Gallagher (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. v, [3], 194, [4] pages. Glossary. Illustrations. Tabular data. Appendix. Index. The dust jacket has some wear, small tears and soiling. This is a myth-shattering guide to bomb survival which offers new hope for millions of Americans. It breaks the hypnotic spell of mass figures bloated into death and destruction. It firmly contradicts the "certain death" psychology advocated by well-meaning but mistaken spreaders of despair and futility. More specifically, this book is a manual for life. Author Mel Mawrence was Chief of Informational Services, Illinois Civil Defense Office. John Clark Kimball was a former foreign correspondent, Air Intelligence Officer, USNR. This work includes scientific details; list of supplies; air burst charts; bomb shelter manufacturers and suppliers (circa 1960). This book was a timely contribution during a period of intense public discussion of, and governmental and personal investment in, civil defense against a nuclear attack. Some of the content on fallout shelters was derived from the British experience of the construction of protection spaces during the German bombing campaign of WWII, frequently referred to as "The Blitz". This book by Colonel Mel Mawrence, with John Clark Kimball, is a well-written primer of survival in the event of nuclear attack. The authors predict that even in a-well-managed unsuspected attack, "the great majority of Americans probably will have a warning of at least hours." The authors emphasize that, by proper preparation, this country could hold the death rate to "between one and eleven per cent of the population." They urge that such preparation be commenced immediately both on a national and an individual basis; they chide those who in their eagerness to avoid hard responsibility, grasp at any excuse, even to the "siren song of certain death.".
