Add to basketWonderfully exuberant and decidedly uncommon handbill featuring the image of an ecstatic drummer in diamond-studded shirt, red ringmaster's tailcoat and checkerboard waistcoat set against a background of floating notes and a stave of music. The verso carries an "Open Letter to Dance Lovers of this City" puffing Webb's orchestra as "America's Greatest Rhythm Band" ("this fact has been definitely proved by their fan mail which exceeds that of Guy Lombardo, Casa Loma and Rusy Vallee"). Chick Webb was a native of Baltimore and the Alcazar Ballroom one of its chief nightspots: "a fabulous palace of dance, with a domed ceiling and beaded chandeliers" (The Baltimore Sun). By April 1937 Ella Fitzgerald was "playing a significant role in helping the Webb band establish a national profile" (Nicholson, p. 50). Stuart Nicholson, Ella Fitzgerald: The Complete Biography, Routledge, 2004; Ken Vail, Charlie Parker & Jazz Club Memorabilia, 421 (illustrated at p. 110). Handbill (228 x 151 mm), printed both sides in red and black. Very good indeed.

Art / Print / Poster First Edition
Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Baltimore, MD: [1937]. Illustrated broadsheet (23x15cm) promoting Chick Webb and his N.B.C. Orchestra and featuring 20-year-old Ella Fitzgerald, who had begun singing with the band in 1935. Verso prints an "Open Letter to Dance Lovers of this City" promoting Webb's band for combining "hot stomp music and sweet melodies." Printed ticket (5x9cm) featuring Fitzgerald's name also included. Fitzgerald herself would vault to fame with "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" the next year and after Webb's untimely death in 1939, would become bandleader. Light rubbing and toning to edges of broadsheet; ticket clean and unmarked; Very Good or better copy of a rare survival celebrating the Baltimore-born bandleader's return to his hometown and a snapshot capturing Ella Fitzgerald's career as she became the "Queen of Jazz.".

Double sided handbill, 6 x 9 in., printed on both sides. Original advertising handbill promoting the event at Philadelphia's Alcazar Ballroom, Friday, April 30th (1937). A colorful flyer, featuring the caricature picture of the drummer-bandleader clad in a red tuxedo and swinging his sticks against a backdrop of flying musical notes. On the verso is "An Open Letter to the Dance Lovers of this City," touting the group as "America's Greatest Rhythm Band." After winning first prize at the famed Apollo Theatre's Amateur Night in 1934 at the age of seventeen, Ella Fitzgerald was soon introduced to Webb and joined his band the following year. By 1937 she had become a mainstay of the group, with her name being prominently highlighted in promotions. After Webb's early death in 1939, she carried on as leader of the band. An excellent evocation of the height of the Swing Era. Small stain at edge, otherwise fine and fresh.
