Condition: guter Zustand. Feder in Braun und Bleistift, braun laviert, auf grautonigem Bütten. 20,7:33,5 cm. Provenienz: Süddeutsche Privatsammlung. Nach einer Ausbildung bei seinem Vater Franz Joseph Weiss (1699-1770) war der gebürtige Münchner Künstler, wie sein Vater, seit 1764 als Porzellanmaler in der Manufaktur Nymphenburg tätig. Ein Stipendium des kurfürstlichen Hofes ermöglichte ihm, sich seit 1769 in der Galerie von Schloß Schleißheim weiterzubilden. Zur Abrundung seines Studiums wurde er ab 1771 Schüler von F.I. Oefele (1721-1797) an der neugegründeten Münchner Zeichenschule. Sein Erfolg brachte ihm später in seiner Heimatstadt die Stellung eines kurfürstlich-bayerischen Hofmalers ein. Zudem wurde er 1770 Mitglied der Münchner Kunstakademie. Weiss hat seinen Zeichenstil mehrfach variiert. Allerdings sind Arbeiten wie unser Beispiel, bei dem der Künstler Figurenstudien aus unterschiedlichen Bildthemen scheinbar willkürlich zusammenfügte, in seinem zeichnerischen und auch graphischen Werk häufiger nachweisbar.
