Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The concepts and fingerings in this book have been developed by analysing the licks used by Charlie Christian. Chord shapes are moveable; thus one can play the riffs in virtually any key without difficulty by simply moving the shape, and fingerings used to play them, up or down the keyboard.… The author shows how the chord shapes - F, D and A are formed, then can easily be modified to major, minor, dominant seventh and diminished seventh chord voicings. Analysing licks frequently by Charlie Christian, Joe has identified a series of what he calls tetrafragments, ie the core element of a lick. The identifiable 'sound' of a particular lick is preserved regardless of how many notes are added on either side of it, eg, pick notes or tag endings. Many examples are shown and played on the CD of how this basic concept was used by Charlie Christian to keep his solo lines moving forward. Weidlich also makes observations on the physical manner Charlie Christian used in playing jazz guitar and how that approach contributed to his smooth, mostly down stroke, pick technique. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. (Fretted). While many extant photos of string band artists show members holding a mandolin, it often can barely be heard in most period recordings because the most important instrument to capture was usually the fiddle or voice. This collection provides you with the opportunity to learn over… 70 old-time-music period songs recorded mostly by Ernest Stoneman, or the duo Grayson & Whitter, during the 1920s and early 1930s. Many of these songs were also "covered" by other string bands regardless of whether they had the opportunity or not to be commercially recorded. CD tracks of some of the songs in this collection as recorded by a number of different string band artists are provided so that performances can be compared. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. (Banjo). Pete Seeger took an interest in playing the 5-string banjo when he was 16 years old after he heard it played at the 1935 Asheville Folk Festival in North Carolina. It wasn't long after, when he was able to have a short lesson with banjoist Bascom Lamar Lunsford, known as the Minstre…l of the Appalachians, where Seeger learned the basics of what would become his basic strum. From then on, Seeger made it a point to seek out, listen to, and learn from any banjo players that he met in his travels, learning a number of different playing styles which he experimented with in backing up his vocals. This book looks at the techniques he was using when he was a member of the Almanac Singers in 1941, seven years before the publication of his first banjo method. Join Pete Seeger as he was evolving his early playing technique through the mid-1950s at the dawn of the folk music era! Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. (Banjo). After the Civil War, the "up picking" finger style of playing the 5-string banjo came into vogue eventually finding its way into the Victorian parlor and, later, college glee and music clubs. The original down picking style didn't entirely die out, because throughout the reaminder o…f the 19th Century, new methods for the banjo often included a number of songs in the older two-finger banjo style of performance. Perhaps the most intricate set of songs to appear in the "original" banjo style were these 34 progressive pieces found in Frank B. Converse's Analytical Banjo Method from 1887. Those songs, presented in this book for clawhammer banjo, offer a nice mix of banjo characteristic pieces, medleys and new compositions from Converse. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. (Banjo). The Round Peak area of Surry County, North Carolina consists of a number of small communities which border Mt. Airy, NC. The Round Peak musical style is synonymous with the old time music pairing of the fiddle with the African-derived banjo and was considered to be the defining ense…mble sound for community dance music as played by the holy trinity of the Round Peak banjo masters: Kyle Creed, Fred Cockerham, and Tommy Jarrell. As most of the Round Peak repertoire is played in the traditional fiddle keys of D Major and A Major, they are the keys that are used in the arrangements of some of the traditional Appalachian fiddle tunes that form its living tradition. Includes a lengthy instructional introduction. Songs are presented in banjo tab. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
