(iii)+305p. endnotes. biography. religion. theology. philosophy. jewish history. history of germany. ~ Abraham Geiger gave the Reform Movement in Judaism its intellectual stature and theoretical justification. He possessed rabbinic learning, profound interest in problems of theology and philosophy, a gift for exposition, and great earnestness. All these he enlisted in the service of Judaism ~ a Judaism transplanted into the climate of nineteenth century Germany. The climate provided both obstacles and opportunities. The middle class, in its drive toward economic expansion, lured Jewish enterprise, but it resented Jewish social and political aspirations. The intellectual liberalism of the day was stimulating, but it came under the suspicious eye of the reactionary state. Protestant religious thinking appeared to taunt orthodoxy in Judaism and stirred men like Geiger to prove that Judaism did not intend to fall behind. In this last he met the determined opposition of traditionalists of every kind. He expected and apparently enjoyed the storm that he aroused. His struggle against the traditionalists forms an interesting chapter in the history of German Jewry. It is now of even greater interest to American Jews, for ultimately Geiger found more convinced and ardent followers on this side of the Atlantic than he had had in Europe. Although this volume contains only a fraction of Geiger's extensive literary output, it offers a comprehensive introduction to a fascinating and influential thinker.

Wiener, Max, 1882-1950, ed. Abraham Geiger and Liberal Judaism. The Challenge of the Nineteenth Century. Compiled with a biographical introduction by Max Wiener, translated from the German by Ernst J. Schlochauer. Philadelphia: Jewish Publication Society, 1962, stated First Edition, 305pp., worn dust-jacket chipped around edges, original price $4.50, very good black cloth, edges rubbed, previous owner's stamp, twice on endpaper. Both the author and the translator died before the book could be published. Translations of passages from Geiger are preceded by a substantial 80pp. biography by Wiener. Immanuel Lewy, reviewed the book, and criticized Geiger's extreme liberalism and elimination of rituals, but praises his role in founding the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums in 1872. "We have since learned that Judaism is not reducible to purely religious terms, that rituals are not as expendable as they seemed to be in the days of Geiger. But Geiger's struggle was not in vain. He founded the first Jewish academy where Jewish history and religious worship could be investigated and analyzed without any dogmatic limitation" (Lewy).

Paperback. Condition: New. Illustrated. Abraham Geiger gave the Reform Movement in Judaism its intellectual stature and theoretical justification. He possessed rabbinic learning, profound interest in problems of theology and philosophy, a gift for exposition, and great earnestness. All these he enlisted in the service of Judaism-a Judaism transplanted into the climate of nineteenth-century Germany. His struggle against the traditionalists forms an interesting chapter in the history of German Jewry, yet is now of even greater interest to American Jews, because Geiger ultimately found more convinced and ardent followers on this side of the Atlantic than he had had in Europe. The late Dr. Max Wiener was a keen student of Jewish intellectual history. An admirer of Geiger, his biographical introduction to this volume is sympathetic and balanced. But the real Geiger-a great scholar, profound thinker, and ardent Jew-emerges from the excerpts of his own writings to which the major portion of this book is devoted. The reader will find here illustrations of Geiger's viewpoint as he wrote to friends, as he delved into the origins of the biblical text, as he engaged in religious polemics, and as he addressed his own congregation, trying to draw them on the principles for which he labored. This reprint edition will be of interest to anyone who seeks to understand the intellectual roots of liberal Judaism.
