Kleine Unterstreichungen und gelegentl. Anmerkungen -- Die Korrespondenz zwischen Sigmund Freud und Edoardo Weiss zeigt Freud in der Rolle eines psychoanalytischen Konsultationsarztes. Diese Seite Freuds ist selten genau beschrieben worden; der Briefwechsel zwischen Freud und Karl Abraham enthält dazu z. B. nur einige wenige Briefe. -- Ein Eindruck, der den Leser der Briefe Freuds an Weiss überrascht, ist die Offenheit, mit der Freud darüber urteilt, ob gewisse Patienten einer Behandlung würdig sind oder nicht. In persönlicher Korrespondenz benutzte Freud scharfe Ausdrücke wie "Lump", um gewisse Menschen zu beschreiben, die zur Behandlung kamen. Er wandte sich gegen den Versuch, sie zu behandeln. Gestützt auf seine reiche klinische Erfahrung konnte er die Warnung aussprechen, daß der Patient, der zu viel über seine Analyse redet, damit eine Bloßlegung der Analyse vorbereite. An anderer Stelle erklärte er mit der Freundlichkeit und Geduld, die für die gesamten Briefe an den jüngeren Kollegen charakteristisch sind, daß Dr. Weiss vielleicht derzeit noch zu jung sei, um die notwendige Vater-Uber-tragung anzuregen. (Weiss war um dreiunddreißig Jahre jünger als Freud.) Zu jeder Zeit übte Freud Vorsicht, nicht zu viel Rat zu geben, und was er zu sagen hatte, war als Anregung und nicht als Enzyklika gemeint. Er war immer darum besorgt, die Selbstachtung seines Schülers zu wahren. -- Immer wieder warnte Freud vor übermäßigem therapeutischem Ehrgeiz. Die Warnung war nicht Ausdruck von Pessimismus, sondern von Zurückhaltung hinsichtlich der Erwartungen, mit denen man damals psychoanalytische und auch andere Heilungsversuche der Geisteskrankheiten und Persönlichkeitsänderungen betrachtete. -- Freuds Worte unterstreichen die ursprüngliche Einstellung, die Psychoanalyse eher als Untersuchungsmethode denn als Behandlungsmethode zu benutzen. -- Eine weitere Warnung drückt sich in den Worten aus "kein Versuch, ihm [dem Patienten] unsere freieren Ansichten über den Sexualverkehr aufzudrängen". -- Verschiedene Aspekte der psychoanalytischen Therapie werden hier klar vor Augen geführt. Freud war sich der Wichtigkeit, den Patienten zu gewinnen, sein Interesse an der psychoanalytischen Arbeit zu wecken und seinen Enthusiasmus zu erregen, bewußt. Worte wie "Eroberung" werden benutzt, um die erwünschte Beziehung zu beschreiben. An einer Stelle mahnt Freud, den Patienten nicht seinem "Dämon" zu überlassen. Dr. Weiss erklärt uns, daß Freud mit dem "Dämon" den Wiederholungszwang meinte. -- Eine eindrucksvolle Eigenschaft dieser Briefe ist ihre offene und überzeugende Darstellung der psychischen Dynamik. Der Empfänger muß sie als Schulung im psychodynamischen Denken erlebt haben. Eine solche Vertiefung des allgemeinen Verständnisses ist für den Schüler von höherem Wert als Hilfe in einer spezifischen Situation; sie ist schwer zu vermitteln und kann leicht irreführend werden, es sei denn, daß der Schüler willig ist, zuzuhören und zu lernen. Fast als einziger in Italien war Dr. Weiss bereit, von diesen höflichen und oft indirekten Ratschlägen Gebrauch zu machen. -- Wir finden in den Briefen viele zwanglose Andeutungen und Anhaltspunkte für die therapeutische Einstellung. In einem Fall sprach sich Freud gegen die Terminsetzung für die Beendigung der Behandlung aus. Oft riet er eine Besprechung mit den Eltern des Patienten an. Einmal empfahl er überraschenderweise die Unterbrechung der Analyse, mit dem Versprechen, die Behandlung in einigen Monaten wiederaufzunehmen. In anderen Briefen erwähnte er die Wichtigkeit der Voraussage bedeutender Entwicklungsvorgänge, um den Anprall feindseliger Regungen in der Übertragungsneurose zu mildern.
