[In the early 1980s George Gray founded The Coast Guard Art Program (CoGAP). He served as CoGAP's chairman for more than twenty years. Active as a muralist and illustrator for seven decades, Gray specialized in historical and military themes. The George Gray Award for Artistic Excellence was named in his honor.
