Add to basketCloth. Condition: Very Good. George Barnard, C R Weld, M& N Hanhart (illustrator). 1st Edition. A very good copy of the 1st edition in the original red cloth binding with 4 colour plates and illustrations in the text. Charles Richard Weld (1813-1869) was an English writer and Historian of the Royal Society. He was invited by a friend in July 1859 to join a shooting and fishing party in the Highlands. After looking at a map he realised how close the Highlands were to the Pentland Firth and the Orkney Islands and accepted enthusiastically. What results is an entertaining and very readable record of his travels. This copy has been rebacked preserving the original spine and is sound and tight The boards have a blind stamped design and the spine has gilt titles and a gilt design. There are a couple of darker marks on the front board and two tiny darker marks on the back board. The front corners have small bumps. The spine is slightly faded. The original brown endpapers have been retained with professional repair at the joints. The pastedowns have advertisements for other publications. Both sets of endpapers are clean but with some edge nibbles and faded areas. There is the armorial bookplate of Charles Stewart Loch (motto 'assiduitate non desidia') on the initial blank. Contents: half title; colour frontispiece by G Barnard with new tissue guard; title with old signature at the top; dedication; contents and illustrations listings; text 404 pp with 3 further plates by G Barnard (one from a sketch by Weld) and illustrations in the text; publisher's catalogue at the rear 24pp. It is very clean internally with occasional light marking and some foxed areas. The page edges are untrimmed and there is light toning to the top edges. The plates have new guards. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, first published in 1920, explores the production and metallurgy of manganese and its alloys during World War I. It is a valuable historical record of the US response to wartime shortages, when they rapidly increased production of manganese to meet the needs of steel production. It also contains much technical and metallurgical information on the beneficiation of low-grade ores as well as the manufacture of ferromanganese and spiegeleisen in the blast furnace. The author, C.M. Weld, was an engineer with the Bureau of Mines and the book brings together the work and reports of many people involved in this effort.Weld attempts to present a comprehensive guide to all aspects of the American manganese and ferroalloy industry in the early 20th century. He succeeds by including chapters on mining, beneficiation, alloy production, and even the economics of the industry. Weldâs focus is on the practical aspects of manganese production and use, but his insights into the challenges and opportunities of the industry are still relevant more than 100 years later. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
